| Memory verse: “And he said unto me, unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” Daniel 8:14 We are going to pick up this lesson, at Daniel 8:14. Remember, I told you in the last lesson we would start here. Before we can understand this verse we need to learn what is the sanctuary? Later we will do a lesson on the 2300 days. It is loosely related to the restoration of God’s people. We need to go back a thousand years in history to Exodus 25:8 in order to understand what Daniel 8:13, 14 is all about. 1. In Exodus 25:1 God spoke to Moses and told him how he wanted the sanctuary built. Why did God want them to have a sanctuary? Exodus 25:8 “And let them make me a sanctuary; that _________ may ______ _______ _______.“ It was not that God wanted to be confined in a temple; His real desire was to dwell in the hearts of each one. Israel was not ready to see this plan of God for their lives. So God gave them a sanctuary and its services, so He could come down and dwell among them. Through the sanctuary service they could then understand the prophecy of the atoning work of Jesus Christ. God called Moses up to Mount Sinai, Exodus 24:16, and gave Him the pattern of the Sanctuary; and, how it was to be built. It was to be a pattern of the Tabernacle, Exodus 2: 5, 9, and 40. 2. What was the pattern it was to be made from? We find that in Hebrews 9:23, 24. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the _________ ___________ themselves with ___________ ______________ than these. For Christ is not entered into the __________ ____________ made with hands which are the figures of the true; but into___________ itself, now to appear in the ___________ of________ for us:” “The holy places made with hands were to be “figures of the true,” “patterns of things in the heavens” (Hebrews 9:24, 23)--a miniature representation of the heavenly temple where Christ, our great High Priest, after offering His life as a sacrifice, was to minister in the sinner’s behalf.” Patriarchs and Prophets 343:2 3. Christ’s work of atonement or death on the cross was to restore the divine image in man. How are we reconciled to God since we are all sinners? Romans 5:10 “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the __________ of __________ ________, much more, being reconciled we shall be ___________ by his life.” 4. What part of the sanctuary service pointed to the Lamb of God, slain for our sins? Exodus 40:6 “And thou shalt set the ________ of the ________ _________ before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.” The burnt offering symbolizing consecration, death to self and sin. Matthew 13:45, 46; Romans 12:1; Galatians 2:20. This alter was in the court yard before the tabernacle. When any one in Israel sinned against God’s Commandments, he bore the guilt and sin, carried the death penalty of the law. The privilege to direct his steps to the sanctuary, he must take a sanctuary; he must take a lamb for a sin offering with him. He would confess his sin over the head of this little lamb; the victim was slain by the sinner there, in the outer court. The Priest caught the blood in a basin. The blood was taken by the Priest into the first apartment of the sanctuary and sprinkled before the second veil. Since Jesus’ death as the lamb, that died for our sins. We accept the cleansing through Jesus’ shed blood. Here are two texts that show us what Jesus’ death made possible for us. Romans 5:8, 9. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified ___________________ we __________________________ from wrath through him.” Hebrews 7:25 “Wherefore _______ is _________ also to ________ them to the uttermost that _______ unto __________ by ________ (Christ), seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Romans 8:35 5. Who is it that makes intercession for us today? Romans 8:34 “Who is he that condemeth? It is ___________ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh ____________ for ____. “ The sanctuary had two apartments. The Holy Apartment and the Most Holy Apartment. There was a veil between these two apartments. On the veil were Angels, done in fine threads of gold. In the first apartment, work was done each day. This work was called, “The Daily” work. The second apartment called, the Most Holy was “The Yearly”. This work was done once a year. It was also called the “Day of Atonement”, which means “At – One- Ment with God”. 6. What other article of furniture was in the outer court? Exodus 40:7. “And thou shalt set the ___________ between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and shalt put water therein.” It was set, we see, between the tent or the sanctuary and the Alter of Burnt Offering. It was before the tent door. 7. What was it used for and what did it represent? Exodus 30:1 8-21 “Thou shalt also make a layer of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. For Aaron and his sons shall _______ _________ _______ and their _________ thereat: When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD: So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations. Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,” The Priest washed their hands and feet before they would go into the sanctuary. It represents the washing away our sins, a regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to _______ _______ he ______ ____, by the _________of ___________ and _______of the _______ ________;” “Around the courtyard there were beautiful white linen curtains that enclosed the courtyard. It was about 90’ X 180’; Exodus 27:18. 8. What was this a symbol of? Revelation 19:8 “And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine _________, __________ and __________: for the fine is the ________________ of ___________.” This was a symbol of no sin. 9. There were three articles of furniture in the first apartment. What where they? Exodus 40:22, 23 “And he put the ______ in the tent of the congregation, upon the side of the tabernacle ____________ without the veil. And he set the _________ in order upon it before the LORD; as the LORD had commanded Moses.” Verses 24, 25 “And he put the ___________ in the tent of the congregation, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle ____________. And he _________ the _________ before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.” Verse 26 “And he put the ________ __________ in the tent of the congregation ________ the ________:” 10. Let’s look at the table with bread on it. It was known as the Table of Shewbread. What did it represent? (Read, Exodus 25:23-30; Tells how the table was to be made.) John 6:33, 35 “For the ___________ of ___________ is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Vs. 35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the _______of________: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” The Table of Shewbread, representing the Living Bread or the Word of God. It was to be on the table at all times, a symbol for God’s presence with us at all times. Just as surely as we need food to live, se we need Christ, “The Living Bread”. 11. What did the candlestick represent? Read about how it was made in Exodus 37:17-21. The beautiful, golden candlesticks, representing the sanctifying ministry of the Holy Spirit. I Peter 1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through ___________ of the ___________, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” JOHN 1:4, 9. “In him was life; and the life was the __________ of ____________ that was the true __________, which __________ every man that cometh into the world.” The golden candlesticks were seven lamps. At least one of the lights were always burning. The oil in the lamps was replenished each morning and evening and they were trimmed. The candlesticks represented both Christ and His people, all are to be lights to the world. Those whose hearts are set aflame by they oil of the Holy Spirit, in turn acts as a light to others. Matthew 5:14 says, “Ye are the light of the world.” 12. What was burnt on this alter? Exodus 30:1 “And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it.” (Read Exodus 30:1-9) Revelation 8:3, 4 “And another angel came and stood at the _________ having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much ___________ that he should offer it with the ____________ of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the ____________ of the ____________ which came with the _____________ of the ____________, ascended up before out of the angel’s hand.” The Alter of Incense had meaning, also. Each morning and evening, the Priest took coals of fire from the Alter of Incense and placed them in the Censer. This small alter stood before the veil, which separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy. They would place incense on the coals so the smoke would ascend and fill the two apartments with the good fragrance. Read Exodus 30:1-9. The Alter of Incense represented the work of Christ as He presents the prayer of God’s people mixed with His righteousness, as they ascended to the Father. The smoke from the incense represents the sweet odor of the prayers as they ascend up to God. 13. There was a veil hung between these two apartments that it separated. The Holy was separated from the Most Holy Place. What was on the veil and what colors were used on it? Exodus 26:31 “And thou shalt make a _________ of _______, and ________, and _________, and fine twined ________ of cunning work: with ___________ shall it be made:” Would have been a very beautiful curtain. 14. There was only one article of furniture in place, which was in back, behind the curtain or veil. What was the article of furniture called? What was inside of the furniture? Hebrews 9:3,4 “And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; And which had the golden censer, and the _________ of the _____________ overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had ____________, and Aaron’s rod that ___________, and the _________ of the covenant; We need to understand the work of this apartment, it was called “The Yearly” or “The Day of Atonement”. We will study this more in another lesson. “For the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the New Testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; for then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
